In most organisations IT infrastructure is not planned, it accumulates. As needs come up, another server is added, another cloud subscription, another backup solution. A few years later nobody knows the total cost precisely, no document says which server does what, and whether the backups actually restore is discovered during a real outage.

We begin with the inventory and the real load: which application consumes what, when the peaks occur, which systems genuinely cannot go down. Sizing follows that measurement. Overprovisioning is money paid every month for nothing; underprovisioning is an outage on your busiest day.

The cloud-or-on-premise question is answered from the same measurements, and in most organisations the right answer turns out to be a mix of both. We write the backup and disaster recovery plan down and then test it with a drill, because having taken a backup is not the point — seeing it restore is. Once monitoring is in place, you notice the fault before your users do.
